Window Tint Laws in Wisconsin
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 50% combined VLT; nonreflective.
- Rear side windows
- At least 35% combined VLT; nonreflective.
- Back window
- At least 35% combined VLT; nonreflective; both outside mirrors below 60% rear VLT.
- Windshield strip
- Inside film only above manufacturer A/AS marking AND outside windshield critical area. No manufacturer mark means no added windshield film.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Combined glass-plus-film visible light transmission, not the film label alone.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: At least 35% combined VLT; nonreflective.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: At least 35% combined VLT; nonreflective; both outside mirrors below 60% rear VLT.
- Original manufacturer-tinted glazing is separate; no ordinary MPV aftermarket exemption stated. Enforcement allows 3% metering tolerance, not an installation target.
- Qualifying medical recommendation may permit 35% front sides subject to written documentation and removal conditions.
