Window Tint Laws in West Virginia
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 35% light transmission; reflectivity at most 20%.
- Rear side windows
- At least 35% light transmission; reflectivity at most 20%.
- Back window
- At least 35% light transmission; reflectivity at most 20%.
- Windshield strip
- Nonreflective strip above AS-1 or top five inches, whichever is closer; not red/yellow/amber.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Device used with safety glazing; front/rear statutory measurement wording differs
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: No transmission minimum behind driver on qualifying MPVs; reflectivity at most 20%.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: No transmission minimum behind driver on qualifying MPVs; reflectivity at most 20%.
- Tint behind driver requires both outside mirrors. Factory-installed sunscreening has a separate exception.
- Rear-device wording does not expressly define a net meter formula; do not treat the film label alone as proof of finished-window compliance.
- Manufacturer certification/labels and medical affidavit conditions apply.
