Window Tint Laws in Utah
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 35% VLT; 5% peace-officer metering variance.
- Rear side windows
- No VLT minimum with both outside mirrors.
- Back window
- No VLT minimum with both outside mirrors.
- Windshield strip
- UHP says more than 70% VLT. Nontransparent material only at top AS-1/top four inches, or specified lower-left three-by-four-inch area.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Combined glass-plus-film visible light transmission, not the film label alone.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: No VLT minimum with both outside mirrors.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: No VLT minimum with both outside mirrors.
- Requirements effective May 7, 2025; obsolete 43% front-side value replaced by 35%. Do not target metering variance.
- Metallic/mirrored appearance prohibited on every window. Applicable federal glazing requirements remain.
