Window Tint Laws in North Dakota
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 35% combined VLT.
- Rear side windows
- At least 35%, unless behind the operator with qualifying outside mirrors on both sides; then no minimum under subsection 4.
- Back window
- At least 35%, unless behind the operator with qualifying outside mirrors on both sides; then no minimum under subsection 4.
- Windshield strip
- At least 70% VLT. Nonreflective tint above AS-1 or within the top 5 inches is excepted.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Combined glass-plus-film visible light transmission, not the film label alone.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: At least 35%, unless behind the operator with qualifying outside mirrors on both sides; then no minimum under subsection 4.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: At least 35%, unless behind the operator with qualifying outside mirrors on both sides; then no minimum under subsection 4.
- Current section 39-21-39(4) states 35%, superseding older 50% charts.
- Rear exception depends on mirrors satisfying section 39-21-38, not passenger-car/MPV class. Clear highway view remains required.
