Window Tint Laws in Montana
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 24% transmission; reflectance at most 35%.
- Rear side windows
- At least 14% transmission; reflectance at most 35%.
- Back window
- At least 14% transmission; reflectance at most 35%.
- Windshield strip
- Clear/transparent below AS-1; upper sunscreening not red/yellow/amber.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Statutory transmission through vehicle window with added material
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: Statutory MPV/van/bus rear side windows exempt from subsection (4)(c) transmission and reflectance limits.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: Same statutory MPV/van/bus rear exemption.
- Statutory MPV defined by ten-or-fewer passengers, truck chassis or special off-road features. General visibility and federal glazing obligations remain.
- Rules apply to already-tinted windows with added material; do not treat percentages as unqualified film-only shopping values. Current official text identifies MCA 2025.
