Window Tint Laws in Maryland
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 35% through-window VLT.
- Rear side windows
- At least 35% through-window VLT.
- Back window
- At least 35% through-window VLT.
- Windshield strip
- No added tint below AS1 or below five inches; shallower boundary controls. Passenger-car any-window 35% requirement also applies to added strip tint.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Combined glass-plus-film visible light transmission, not the film label alone.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: No rear VLT minimum under section 22-406(i)(1) for qualifying statutory registrations; other equipment rules remain.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: No rear VLT minimum under section 22-406(i)(1) for qualifying statutory registrations; other equipment rules remain.
- Exception follows registration class under sections 13-913, 13-917 or 13-937, not SUV marketing description.
- Medical certification in required State Police format must be kept in vehicle; it does not permit tint below windshield strip boundaries.
