Window Tint Laws in Louisiana
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 25% VLT, all tolerances included.
- Rear side windows
- At least 25% VLT, all tolerances included.
- Back window
- At least 12% VLT, all tolerances included.
- Windshield strip
- Transparent topmost five inches only; not red or amber.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Combined glass-plus-film visible light transmission, not the film label alone.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: Behind-driver MPV windows exempt from transmission minimum.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: Behind-driver MPV windows exempt from transmission minimum.
- 2025 Act 143 changed front sides from 40% to 25%, effective August 1, 2025. Do not subtract an additional tolerance.
- Maximum luminous reflectance 20%. Behind-driver transmission exceptions also cover trucks, buses, trailers and motor homes.
- Installer labeling and historical tint/vehicle provisions remain separate.
