Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 35% when tested on one-eighth-inch clear glass.
- Rear side windows
- At least 18% when tested on one-eighth-inch clear glass.
- Back window
- At least 18% when tested on one-eighth-inch clear glass.
- Windshield strip
- Transparent upper strip outside AS/1; alternatively at least 70% combined windshield transmission, not red or yellow.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Side/rear film tested on 1/8-inch clear glass; windshield combined glass-plus-film
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: At least 8% when tested on one-eighth-inch clear glass.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: At least 8% when tested on one-eighth-inch clear glass.
- Side/rear figures are statutory test-glass specifications, not guaranteed readings on the actual vehicle factory glass. Measurements have ±3% tolerance.
- Front reflectance maximum 25%; rear maximum 35%. Nontransparent back glass requires both mirrors. Labeling and separate perforated-product rules apply.
- The 70% windshield provision became effective July 15, 2024.
