Window Tint Laws in Hawaii
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 35% VLT ±6% for front sides/wing vents.
- Rear side windows
- Sedan rear sides exempt from numeric minimum with both outside mirrors.
- Back window
- Rear glass including sedan back window exempt from numeric minimum with both mirrors.
- Windshield strip
- Transparent top film above AS-1; without markings, no lower than four inches from top at middle of bottom edge of upper molding. Separate federal-compliant material exception applies.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Combined glass-plus-film visible light transmission, not the film label alone.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: Listed vans, minivans, trucks and buses rear sides exempt with both mirrors; verify actual class, not generic MPV marketing label.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: Rear glass of vans/minivans/trucks/buses and other motor vehicles exempt with both mirrors.
- 2025 Act 129 retained 35% ±6% front standard and expanded rear exceptions to sedans. Do not substitute 70% front sides.
- Mirrored/high-reflective colored red/yellow/amber/blue appearance prohibited. Installer certificate required in vehicle. Statute includes traffic-stop window-lowering/cooperation conditions.
