Window Tint Laws in Delaware

Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.

VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.

Front side windows
At least 70% combined VLT under regulation, with manufacturer tolerance ±3%; DMV approval/certificate requirements also apply.
Rear side windows
No separate rear-side numerical minimum established in cited regulation; verify applicability with DMV.
Back window
Tint permitted with outside mirrors on both sides; no percentage stated.
Windshield strip
No tint below AS-1; without AS-1 on older vehicles, no farther than five inches.

Vehicle class and conditions

Measurement basis: Combined glass-plus-film visible light transmission, not the film label alone.

SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: No separate rear-side numerical minimum established in cited regulation; verify applicability with DMV.

SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: Tint permitted with outside mirrors on both sides; no percentage stated.

  • DMV summary says windshield/front-side tint prohibited; regulation specifies conditional standards, not unconditional permission to install any 70% film. Confirm approval with DMV.
  • Rear-window wording does not separately distinguish every rear-side pane. Rear mounted brake light on 1986+ vehicles must stay free of tint. Aftermarket certificate required.
