Window Tint Laws in Connecticut
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 35% total VLT ±3%; not mirror-like.
- Rear side windows
- At least 35% total VLT ±3%.
- Back window
- Rear-window transmission minimum does not apply with outside mirrors on both sides providing 200-foot rearward view; otherwise 35%.
- Windshield strip
- Only transparent topmost material with lower edge at least 29 inches above undepressed driver seat under statutory measurement; not red or amber.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: Combined glass-plus-film visible light transmission, not the film label alone.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: Qualifying manufacturer-labeled MPVs may have darker behind-driver windows with both outside mirrors.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: Back-glass exemption with qualifying mirrors on both sides.
- Front reflectance at most 27% ±3%; rear at most 21% ±3%. Use DMV/statute 35% ±3%, not the older regulation wording of 32% as a shopping target.
- Aftermarket tint requires DMV compliance sticker. Medical authorization uses Form E-220; follow approved conditions.
