Window Tint Laws in Alaska
Laws change. Verify current requirements with your local DMV/RMV before choosing or installing film. This is not legal advice.
VLT is visible light transmission: lower percentages mean darker windows. A film's labeled shade is not necessarily the finished glass-plus-film reading. The limits below cover ordinary passenger cars unless stated otherwise.
- Front side windows
- At least 70% total light transmittance; see medical and qualifying vehicle-class exceptions.
- Rear side windows
- Rear door windows and quarter glasses: at least 40% total light transmittance.
- Back window
- Back glass: at least 40% total light transmittance, subject to medical and documented pre-July 1, 1994 rear-window exceptions.
- Windshield strip
- Aftermarket eyebrow strip only at top edge, extending no more than five inches downward; medical exception separately applies.
Vehicle class and conditions
Measurement basis: NET: total light through window including glazing; manufacturing variance allowance ±3%, measured with manufacturer-certified device
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle rear sides: Manufacturer-identified multipurpose vehicles may use tint complying with FMVSS 205, 49 CFR 571.205 (1992); no universal numeric rear minimum supplied by this exception.
SUV, van and multipurpose-vehicle back window: Manufacturer-identified multipurpose vehicles may use tint complying with FMVSS 205, 49 CFR 571.205 (1992); documented older rear-window exception also applies.
- Mirrored tinting material is prohibited on every window. Allowed tint colors are green, gray, bronze, neutral smoke, or a sun reflective auto film; the latter does not override the mirrored-material prohibition.
- Section (b)(4) also covers limousines and passenger buses used to transport persons for hire, and motor homes; manufacturer classification, not an assumed body style, controls MPV eligibility.
- Medical exception permits lower transmission when a driver or frequent passenger must be shielded from direct sun for medical reasons, certified annually by an Alaska-licensed physician; certification must be carried in the vehicle. No invented medical VLT floor.
- Section (h): tinted rear window is exempt from tinting/transmittance regulations only with owner proof tint was installed before July 1, 1994 and both driver-side and passenger-side rearview mirrors.
- General mirror requirements in 13 AAC 04.220 apply independently; do not treat two mirrors as permission for new dark rear tint.
